During my internship at Calspan during the summer of 2023, I was proud to be a vital part of the engineering operations at their Genessee Street Campus. I worked with all the different business units, providing any miscellaneous engineering support that was required. I was able to develop skills relevant to structural design, high-pressure pneumatics, crash testing, Finite Element Analysis, and more.

Pneumatic system

The final design for high-pressure pneumatic system made for vehicle crash testing at Calspan. The system was designed to withstand 3,000 psi of pressure, utilizing hydraulic ferrule-style tube fittings. The system also needed a variety of instrumentation and safety lockouts to ensure safe operation.

Drum FEA

I performed a finite element analysis on a large spinning drum to investigate the stresses caused by the addition of balancing weights.

Pneumatic Safety Catch

I designed and fabricated a fixture to add a pneumatic actuator to a catch used to drop calibration weights. The addition of the pneumatic actuator allowed for remote operation.

Impactor Probe

Modeled an existing impactor probe and created parts list for associated fixtures.

Drive Motor Frame

Redesigned a frame that mounted a diesel engine to a concrete pad. The frame needed to withstand a variety of forces, some exceeding 30,000 lbs. The structural integrity of the frame was verified using finite element analysis.
